For more than 60 years, the Slovak Red Cross has been engaged in educational activities in the field of non-contributory blood donation. For 28 years, always in February, the Valentine's Blood Drop campaign has been reminding us of the need for regular blood donations and the constant acquisition of new blood donors among healthy people. This year's campaign started, like the summer semester at TUKE, on February 13, 2023.

The Technical University of Košice was one of the first to join this campaign, on St. Valentine's Day, February 14. The premises of the ground floor of the TECHNICOM University Science Park have been converted into a mobile blood donation site of the Hematology-Transfusion Department of the AGEL Košice Šaca Hospital.

Despite the difficult conditions due to the public transport company strike and interruption of classes at some faculties, more than 60 people came to donate blood and help. 57 of them could donate blood, thanks to which the medical staff managed to provide more than 25 liters of life-saving fluid for patients with life-threatening conditions. 

All voluntary donors deserve our appreciation and thanks.

Who can donate blood and how?

Any healthy person over 18 years of age, weighing over 50 kg can donate blood. Donating blood takes about an hour and approximately 450 milliliters of blood is taken from the donor at one time. Do not donate blood on an empty stomach; it is advisable to have a healthy breakfast, balanced diet and drink enough water the day before the donation. Where are the donation sites?

There are donation sites in almost every major city, find the nearest one. At some donation sites, it is necessary to make an appointment in advance, at others you can come any time during office hours.
