Winners of the Startup Competition

On 14 December 2020, the 12th round of one of the oldest startup competitions in Slovakia „Do you have an Idea?“, which is announced twice a year since 2014 by the Rector of the Technical University of Košice, was held through the Startup Centre of the University Science Park TECHNICOM
In the context of the current pandemic situation, the competition was held hybridly in the online environment with the support of the NTI technical team using the telepresence broadcasting studio infrastructure of the USP TECHNICOM. 
Startups competed for a stay at the Startup Centre, within which they complete a 6-month intensive acceleration programme aimed at supporting the development of their innovative projects and have the opportunity to use the research and development infrastructure, capacities and premises of the USP TECHNICOM. 15 innovative projects advanced to the finals of the 12th round of the competition. The jury has selected 9 projects for the pre-incubation stay in the Startup Centre:
Hoppy. Be like you – focuses on the development of a sleep monitoring application to improve the quality of life; Národný park Slovenský raj – the aim is to develop a portal solution for the National Park Slovenský raj, through which comprehensive innovative services and information for visitors will be provided; Read Slovakia – the aim is to build an innovative book sharing system; Restio box – focuses on the solution of a secure box, which is to serve as a health-secured space – a refuge, in which those interested can spend some time in private; True Care – the objective of the startup is the provision of comprehensive support and assistance services for elder people; BioGreenPack – offers its own solution – ecological, biodegradable bioplastic, which can become a full substitute for disposable plastic packaging; Signica – the aim is to develop a comprehensive intelligent traffic sign management system for cities, towns and villages, as part of the smart city concept; grantUp – offers a solution of an online information magazine providing clear information about grants, project management, innovations and trends; rescueBOOK – offers a solution enabling experiential education in the field of first aid training; Mestometer – offers an innovative solution – an interactive spatial model of a city suitable for spatial planning in cities.  
The jury proposed three startups advancing directly to the Incubator based on the level of development of the projects: Nordics IO – the aim is the development and operation of an innovative online platform that will enable arrangement of expert services of quality human resources (nearshoring) for corporations from abroad; ProWise – the aim is to provide data services integrating open data from various databases (OPP, registries, …), which will enable complex problem-oriented analyses – data solutions for public and commercial sector with an emphasis on transparency of interconnections; EKOpallets – aimed at development and production of environmentally-friendly and affordable EURO pallets, as a replacement of wooden pallets. It also offers a solution for intelligent pallet tracking and pallet rental services.
The advancing startups have been selected by the expert committee led by its chairman A. Čižmár, Vice-Rector of TUKE. The members of the committee were representatives of the private and public sphere: Representatives of TUKE – M. Behún, M. Chovanec, F. Jakab, A. Lavrin, M. Michalko, P. Feciľak, Ľ. Kolesár, Ľ. Biňas; P. Mirossay (Slovensko IT), D. Vojtko  (FPT Slovakia), M. Kubiš (CVTI SR), M. Laco (CIVITA Slovakia)  a M. Varga (Deutsche Telekom IT Solution Slovakia), T. Bel (Vision Ventures). The 12th round of the competition was held in close cooperation with “innovlab” and the Slovak Business Agency (SBA). 
The USP TECHNICOM Startup Centre was established in 2014 and is one of the key components of ecosystem of business acceleration, technology transfer and innovation at TUKE within the structure of University Science Park TECHNICOM. Its aim is to provide an environment for ensuring the acceleration process for creation of small and medium-sized “Hi-Tech” companies (“Start-up and Spin-off” companies), based mainly on results of research and innovation activities of TUKE departments.  
In the short period of their existence, the Startup Centre and Incubator have gained a good reputation by organizing activities to identify and support innovative solutions and have become an important element of the innovative potential of the region with a nationwide impact. The selection of startups for the Startup Centre is implemented through competition of innovative projects “Do you have an idea? Present your startup!”. Since 2014, more than 160 innovative projects have participated in the competition, and more than 60 startups have been given the opportunity to complete a 6-manth pre-incubation stay.
