CORONAVIRUS – Guidance of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic

Messages

In connection with the spread of respiratory disease caused by a new coronavirus COVID-19, the Security Council of the Slovak Republic held a meeting which has led to taking concrete steps and determined how to proceed in the current situation. In this context, the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport has issued guidance for schools and school facilities.

If the students or employees of the education sector have recently been to and have returned from areas where the occurrence of coronavirus has been confirmed, such persons must monitor their health condition in the next 14 days after their return.

In the event that any person who has been to areas where the virus had occurred has above symptoms over a period of 14 days, especially fever, cough, sore throat, such person must:

  • stay home, not go to the doctor directly, contact the doctor by telephone, describe the symptoms and follow doctor's instructions,
  • if the doctor, based on the symptoms described, decides that the person must be hospitalized, the doctor will send a special ambulance to that person. In any case, the person must not go to the emergency room or the infectious disease department individually in person,
  • if the symptoms are not severe, the general practitioner may decide that the person remains in home quarantine,
  • if there is suspicion of a student residing in dormitories, it is necessary to act in a similar manner.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic strongly ADVISES AGAINST organizing any trips, excursions and other events at the present time in areas with confirmed occurrence of coronavirus.

The Ministry of Education advises kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, higher education institutions, school facilities, student residences and dormitories to adhere to the general preventive protective measures:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use disinfectant based on alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands,
  • when you cough, cover both the mouth and nose with a disposable handkerchief and then throw it in the bin,
  • avoid close contact with people who have symptoms of respiratory infection and who have at least one of the following symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath.

Pupils without symptoms of the disease may not be excluded from classes solely on the ground that they previously stayed in areas affected by the occurrence of coronavirus if the pupil is fulfilling his/her compulsory school attendance. In other cases (e.g. kindergarten), it depends on the decision of the school director in agreement with the child's legal representative. Unless children and pupils have clinical signs of respiratory disease, there is no reason to restrict them. At the same time, it is necessary to appeal to parents to not send their child with symptoms of the disease to school.

Such a procedure applies equally to employees of the education sector.
